6-04-2011:  At their 11th meeting on 6 April 2011, the Ministers? Deputies adopted the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence and agreed to open it for signature by member states at the ministerial session on 11 May in Istanbul.  This new landmark treaty of the Council of Europe opens the path for creating a legal framework at pan-European level to protect women against all forms of violence, and prevent, prosecute and eliminate violence against women and domestic violence., The Convention also establishes a specific monitoring mechanism in order to ensure effective implementation of its provisions by the Parties.

March 2011: A major step was taken on 21 March in the fight against trafficking in human beings. The Council adopted EU-wide minimum rules concerning the definition of criminal offences and the level of sanctions in this area.
