Bulgarian Gender Research Foundation

The Bulgarian Gender Research Foundation is an independent non-governmental organization that promotes women's human rights, gender equality and tolerance in Bulgaria through research, education and advocacy programs. The organization was founded in June, 1998 in Sofia. The group consists of lawyers, university professors and women's rights activists.

 

The main issues we work on are: violence against women with specific focus on domestic violence, sexual harassment, trafficking in women and honour related violence; social - economic rights of women; gender research and advocacy aimed at promoting gender equality in Bulgaria.

 

The BGRF is one of the most active Bulgarian organizations working in field of gender equality. The organization has open and transparent relations with the other NGOs and collaborates a lot with partners from the country and abroad.

 

The Bulgarian Gender Research Foundation is a national group. Since 2001 the BGRF has a youth program. The organization has branches in 3 towns in Bulgaria /Plovdiv, Haskovo, Silistra/ and a representation in Gorna Oryahovitza. The BGRF has contributed a lot to the legislation in the field of violence against women and on equal opportunities of women and men. The organization contributed to the Draft law on equal opportunities of women and men, the Law on combating trafficking in human beings, the Law on protection against Discrimination, the Law on protection against domestic violence. The latter  was recently adopted by the Bulgarian Parliament also  thanks to the Foundation's lobbying campaign before the Bulgarian institutions.

 

The organization plays a key and leading role in disseminating new ideas and projects aimed at empowerment of women.
