Human Rights Defence Centre - KEPAD

 

The Human Rights Defence Centre (KEPAD) was established in June 1998, as a non-profit, non-governmental organization, by a group of human rights experts with the aim to promote and protect human rights in Greece and the wider region.The objectives of the Centre include providing practical knowledge on human rights issues, raising awareness, training, mobilization for the improvement of the situation concerning the application of human rights and provision of assistance and protection to persons belonging to vulnerable social groups. Since 2003 KEPAD acquired Special Consultative Status with the UN Economic and Social Council.

The activities of KEPAD include:

A. Organization of conferences, educational programs and raising awareness campaigns on issues such as:
  • Democracy and human rights
  • Elimination of all forms of discrimination-xenophobia, racism, etc.
  • Minority issues
  • Migrants and refugees
  • Gender equality
  • Trafficking in human beings

B.Provision of legal and psychological assistance to victims of violence, abuse and exploitation, including victims of trafficking, as well as to migrants, refugees, persons with disabilities, etc.

 

C.Conduct of research and studies for violations of human rights in Greece and cooperation with competent authorities for the improvement of the situation whenever these violations are detected.

 

D. Founder and Coordinator of ARIADNE regional Network against trafficking in human beings in the region of SE and E. Europe. 

 

E. Membership in the ASPIDDA Development Partnership for the Promotion of Equal Rights for Trafficked Persons in the framework of EQUAL Community Initiative (Axe 1: Employment, Measure 1.2: Combating Racism and Xenophobia in the Labour Market) which is financed by the EU Social Fund and the Greek Ministry for Employment and Social Protection.

 

F. Participation in various human rights projects, conferences, missions, etc. KEPAD has acquired, in

2003, the Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
KEPAD cooperates closely with the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the European Union, the Organization for the Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Stability Pact for SE Europe, as well as with other NGOs and governmental agents engaged in the field of its mission. The Centre participates in international conferences and missions abroad.
